Slave Play
Slave Play deals with race, sex, culture, trauma, power, and interracial relationships. It tears at the fabric of our perceived realities and sheds light on uncomfortable topics with a purpose. It bluntly addresses the microaggressions that have persisted against black Ameicans since the time of slavery. By setting the play in a time and place that is having these difficult conversations it forces the white characters to see their white privilege in a way that is hyper visible. The term “slave play” refers to both slavery in America as well as sexual slavery role-play. The notion of having these two topics in a play is both provocative and illuminating.
In my telling of Slave Play I hope to help shed a light on the story through the use of costumes. I will have traditional Antebellum South clothing in act one to help carry the story and add to the necessary uncomfortableness the audience feels. I intended to use color as a way to help highlight the perceived ideas of whiteness in the play and the separation that the characters feel towards each other. I want the costumes to feel as if they are an extension of the script that flows with the objective of the story.
